A photo can be the only bridge between who we were and who we are today.
I'm Surya, founder of The Missing Sock. Here's why this TMS exists.
Why "The Missing Sock"?Picture this: you dig through a fresh pile of laundry looking for your sock's pair, and it's nowhere to be found. You cut your losses and grab a new pair. It's okay to let a sock go missing, you can always get a new one.
But there are things we can't get back once they're lost. Like their first day of school, or that gap-toothed smile they'll never have again.
"There are things that we cannot get back once they are lost."
They come and go, and we have to live them to the fullest. We help you remember the moments that won't happen again. And when we do, it feels like that moment of relief when you finally find the missing pair of your favorite sock.
My Story
I graduated in clinical psychology, though photography was already pulling at me. What started as a hobby, photographing friends and people I cared about, helping them see themselves the way I already saw them: genuinely beautiful, inside and out, even when they couldn't see it themselves, eventually became official too.
I went on to get certified in photography, but that instinct to really see someone came from psychology first.
But the real reason The Missing Sock exists goes back further than that.
Growing up, I have almost no photos of myself as a child. My father held a belief that taking a photo froze a piece of you in time, so photos of me were rare. Today, as an adult, I'd give anything to see what I looked like at three, four, five years old. That's a gap I still feel.
The only photos I do have are from Picture Day, the ones my mom bought from the school photographer every year. Those aren't just portraits to me. They're proof I existed. They're my connection to the child I was.
That's when I understood what this work really is. A school photo isn't a formality. For a lot of families, it's the memory time can't take away.
And someday, it'll be that same photo their child looks back on, the way I look back on mine.
Our MissionNo child should grow up without visual memories of their childhood.
Every family we work with deserves images that capture what only exists in that moment, real personality, real emotion, not forced smiles or uncomfortable poses.
Sometimes that means a genuine laugh. Sometimes it means a kid mid-meltdown on their very first Picture Day. Both are real. Both are worth keeping.
I Built This, Now Others Carry It Forward
I didn't set out to build a team, I set out to take better photos. But once you're doing this work for real families, at real scale, you can't do it as one person. So today, a team of photographer-artists carries this forward, each with their own eye, their own sensitivity.
Training an artist is never copy-paste. Instead of asking every photographer to shoot exactly like me, I taught them the philosophy: what we're looking for, what matters, where the heart of the image lives. Then I stepped back and let them bring their own essence to it.
When that mix works, the result feels less like a posed photo and more like a real moment someone happened to capture.
Meet the Team
Yes, these are baby photos. We think that's fitting.
We're always looking for photographer-artists who see the world this way too.
